The archaeological and historical heritage of Deppitiya Rajagirimalpaya Viharaya
Among the temple is in Sabaragamuwa province, Kegalle district this Buddhists “Deppitiya Rajagirimalpaya Viharaya” place has historical value.
We can meet this temple in Colombo-Kandy road turn right side in Mawanalla Bridge and go 8 miles in Aranayaka road. This temple was the place which was the monk ‘Maliyadewa’ in Wattarama who take a rest in here. And also there was an education centre in the middle section of period of Anuradhapuraya. According to legend this place was the birth place of the king III ‘Dappula’ in period of Anuradhapura and when he becaome the king here and built this temple in this place.
The king III ‘Dappula’ was built ‘Sathmahal’ mansion in this area and gave many villages note in history. And also this temple named as “Rajagirimalpaya” because of the king was built it. Later this temple was reconstruction the king I ‘Wemaladarmasuriya’. the “Maha Wanuma” in ‘Maura’ memorandum note about this Deppitiy temple.
The king ‘Dappula’ was repaired the walls around the temple and conservation it. The reclining image is in here built in presently. It is 15 cubit high and around with clean dragon pandol. This dragon pandol is the best clean dragon pandal.
The special thing of this temple is wooden door frame fix in period of king ‘Dappula’. This door frame is fix in new temple in presently. There are petal of lotus, design two-swan, engrave of ‘Narilatha’ and figure of elephant. According to report of ‘Kagalu’ the first Sri Lankan archaeological commissioner Mr. H.C.P. bell note about this door frame.
We can see the many ruins of stone towers, tills and mercerized stones, ‘bhairavas’, idols and guardstone which was the ‘Sathmahal’ mansion built the king ‘Dappula’. The bodhi tree is belonging to bodhi with ‘Detispala Ruha Bodhi’.
