Description |
The temple (Viharage) has been built by Gannoruwa Loku Muhandiram, on 1752 A.D. But there is evidence of having a temple there before 1752 A.D. When entering through the gateway which was built recently, one can see the preaching hall to the east. It is a huge building, which has been built recently, with high walls covered from all four sides. To the west of the preaching hall, there is a stupa built by King Rajadhi Rajasinha. It is bubble shaped which has the features of Kandyan stupa tradition. In front of the stupa there is a small open porch and statues of Lord Buddha and god Vishnu are placed to worship. At the west end of the premises there is the hermitage. In front of it is the image house, which has been attached to the high wall there. In the middle of the image house is the shrine (Gandhakuti) . |
Things to See |
An image of Lord Buddha in 27 feet high is inside the room. This image has been sculptured by Abarana Archariya. The calmness of the statues of Lord Buddha cannot be seen in this statue. The eyes are somewhat of fearsome look. |
