Description |
From there, it has to be climbed about two hundred steps to reach the vihara premises. It says in one folk tale that because of an arrow had hit on a rock near the door of the len-vihara, this place is called Hindagala. In another folk tale it is called Hindagala as there is a big rock at the vihara site. Any way this vihara has a connection to a long history. A fragment of an inscription has been found at the vihara compound. It is considered that it belongs to 7th century. In another inscription, it is mentioned that a minister named Patasala-Abala has given an offering to build a Bodhighara. Paintings drawn above the present roof of the len-vihara on which drip ledges were carved , were destroyed by a fire in 1961 |
