The archaeological and historical heritage of Matale Gurubabila Purana Viharaya
Among the temple in Matale district this ‘Matale Kaikawela Gurubabila Purana Viharaya’ is important place. this temple is situated in ‘Aban Gaga’ divisional secretary area from Matale to four mils in east side there is Gurubela village. This Kaikawela was one of the barrier in the king “Dewana Patis” who was constitute barrier in this area.
As well as there is a story how this ‘Gurubabela’ name is become. According to legends the monk who was participate the canon was written down in Matale Aluviharaya, that monk was built a temple in small Ben and he study with the little novice in here. In that reason this place is glow. The teacher who was glow this place become the ‘Gurubabela’. Golden period of this temple was the period of “Saranankara Himi”. Ven.sir. was ordaining five monks in here.
This ‘Gurubabila Viharaya’ is a ‘Tampita Viharaya’. It made by using four stone towers on the large timber as a rectangle shape. There are many paintings in here. among those there are ‘Suvesivewaranaya’, figures of eighty disciples and Sumedha hermit was get the annotation. In parent time the wall made by wattle and fix straw to the roof. There are caion, old budhi tree, present shrine and ‘Darma Shalawa’. This temple also called as ‘Jayanthi Viharaya’ in presently. Because this temple was open in anniversary of Buddha.
In Matale historical ‘Gurubabila Viharaya’ is the best place with including painting belonging to period of Kandy.
